I have always been interested in the intersection of diversity and librarianship, and in aspects of diversity that are less frequently considered, such as one’s generation.  In 2017, I had the opportunity to present to colleagues on this subject.

As a professional librarian at the University of California, Riverside, I am represented by a union – the University Council-American Federation of Teachers, which is also affiliated with CFT (California Federation of Teachers) and AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations).  I’m very proud to be a union member, and I spend a lot of my time working with the union.  I am the current President for UC-AFT Local 1966 (Riverside), grievance steward for librarians, and member of our bargaining team.

One of my union projects is our Local 1966 Unit 17 shop newsletter, called The Raven.  The name was inspired by the Game of Thrones books – the characters use ravens instead of pigeons to send messages.  It’s meant to highlight issues of interest to represented librarians and to be a source of fun and useful information.  The inaugural issue was published on May 22, 2015 – the one-year anniversary of our first Labor-Management meeting here at the UCR Library.

Check out one of my side projects, The E-Book Gallery.

I really love Wordle.  It’s a free word cloud generator with enough font and color options to keep me happy.  It also gives you a count of word usage!  In one of my blogs, The eBook Gallery, I post monthly Wordles that are made from the titles of all the e-books purchased by the UCR Library.  The Wordle above represents about three year’s worth of e-book purchases, showing the most popular topics with our library users and subject specialists.
