As a professional librarian at the University of California, Riverside, I am represented by a union – the University Council-American Federation of Teachers, which is also affiliated with CFT (California Federation of Teachers) and AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations).  I’m very proud to be a union member, and I spend a lot of my time working with the union.  I am the current President for UC-AFT Local 1966 (Riverside), grievance steward for librarians, and member of our bargaining team.

One of my union projects is our Local 1966 Unit 17 shop newsletter, called The Raven.  The name was inspired by the Game of Thrones books – the characters use ravens instead of pigeons to send messages.  It’s meant to highlight issues of interest to represented librarians and to be a source of fun and useful information.  The inaugural issue was published on May 22, 2015 – the one-year anniversary of our first Labor-Management meeting here at the UCR Library.

I was featured in the April/May 2015 issue of California Teacher, the magazine for the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) Union.  My union, University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT) is part of CFT.  See the full article online here.
